We stayed overnight in Hot Springs, South Dakota. On our way to Crazy Horse Monument we passed through Wind Caves National Park.
The early morning drive was gorgeous. Some beautiful rolling hills.
The park is filled with grasslands and underground caves. We only drove through the park hoping to catch a glimpse of some wildlife.
It wasn’t long before we came across some buffalo in the road. Drive slowly.
One important rule to know. And don’t even try to pet them. Many people have been hurt trying to get too close to these magnificent animals.
It can be so tempting to try to get close to them when they get this close. This one was using the sign pillar as a scratching post.
If you watch for awhile you may even catch a scuffle between a couple of the buffalo in the distance. We heard from some locals that you don’t always get to see the buffalo. It appears that morning is a good time as they don’t like the heat too much.
While the buffalo are large and magnificent, there are other wildlife creatures about. This one came out to see what the fuss is all about.
Even without the wildlife this is some beautiful countryside to gander at.
This was a very scenic park to drive through. We will definitely spend some more time here when we return. There is a visitor center and some cave exploration available.
