My wife and I got some free rooms in Biloxi over the Christmas weekend in 2015. Free rooms? Off we went.
I was curious about the many casinos that are in the area. My wife really wanted to see the gulf beaches. We compromised and saw both.
We got a very nice room at Harrah’s Gulf Coast Casino. We got a view of the gulf shown above.
We were expecting a little better weather than we got but it was December after all.
We visited a few casinos during our 2 days there. The Beau Rivage was one of the nicest that we visited. The holiday decorations were awesome. We have more about that in another post. The Hard Rock casino can be seen just behind the Beau Rivage.
We drove down to Gulfport to see the Island View Casino Resort and to visit the beaches on the way back. We snuck into the casino employee parking lot to get a few nice pictures from a few stories up.
Here’s a few pictures from the parking lot view. The Port of Gulfport (which sounds redundant) stretches out into the gulf behind the parking lot. I kept trying to test my talent at taking pictures of wildlife. Thought I would start with some simple seagulls.
On the way back we found a beach to stop at. There are several that stretch from Gulfport to Biloxi.
My wife wanted to take a walk on the beach and stick her toes in the water. We were a little disappointed by the beach that we stopped at. There were warning signs about bacteria and several dead fish all along the waterline. I am not sure if this is always the situation but it was a disheartening find.
I did get in a few more bird pictures. It was fun to see if I could get some close ups.
I think that every tourist beach town has at least one of these. This one stood out with its bright colors. It was also notable because all of the stores were on the second story.
One of the back stories in visiting this area was hurricane Katrina. This area was hit hard by the 2005 hurricane and it still shows throughout the area. There were many empty home lots and those that were rebuilt were up on tall stilts.
We would like to go back to this area and spend some more time. There are many historical sites that we would like to explore. Besides the hurricane Katrina storyline, there was the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library. While it may not be popular with many people, it was an important part of American history.
