I have heard of Cadillac Ranch for years even when living in California. I forgot all about it until one day we passed on by while driving on I-40 west of Amarillo, Texas. We made it a point to return at our earliest opportunity.
Located off of the frontage road, you park and walk through this colorful gate to go see the cars.
It is a little bit of a walk to get there. This was an art project built in 1974. A little known fact is that it was moved in 1997 to its current location due to the city starting to encroach towards it.
The first word that comes to mind when I got close enough was COLOR.
It is pretty obvious that this work of art has been taken over by its patrons.
This seems to have gone from a statement of cars to an interactive art piece with its patrons.
Patrons at work here.
One thing is certain. If you visit in the spring, it will be different by fall. This will never be the same day after day.
If you visit, make sure you bring your spray paint and – by all means – keep it on the far side of the sign.
If you love strange places, interactive art, spray paint, and COLOR; then this is your kind of place. Make your mark on the world even if it will only last as long as the next person to make there mark.
