While driving up US 385 towards Crazy Horse in the Black Hills of South Dakota we ran into an interesting sight.
At first we saw what we thought may be a colorful water tower. We drove a bit further hoping to find a spot to get a good picture.
Once we realized that this was a hot air balloon descending for a landing we stopped to get some pictures of it. I soon understood that it was shooting for the road itself as a landing spot. Seeing a car approaching I held up my hand to stop or slow them. They thought I was waving so they waved back.
Fortunately they figured out what was going on and were able to stop in time for an up close view.
After all of the commotion all was well and they had a safe landing while sitting on the side of the road. Their chase team was there (out of the picture frame) to gather everyone and pack up the balloon.
They landed at this junction in the road.
Pretty interesting experience that doesn’t happen too often.
